Questions
What size shed is exempt from a building permit?
Many towns exempt one-story sheds up to 120 sq ft; the model code (IRC 2012 and later) allows 200 sq ft. Your town decides.
Is a zoning permit different?
Yes. Some towns need a zoning permit for setbacks even when no building permit is needed.
